No summer vacation for Vermont ski resort
(NECN: Jack Thurston, Jeffersonville, Vt.) - If you'd expect a Vermont ski area to be a silent ghost town this long after the snow's melted, then rethink summer at the Smuggler's Notch Resort in Jeffersonville, Vt. That's where the company Arbortrek Canopy Adventures has a goal of growing the tourism niche of adrenaline-fueled exploration. "I'm excited about this," said visitor Barry Greene of Stoughton, Mass. "I've been reading about it for a year!"The adventure course opened this past winter. It's open year-round, and has two suspension bridges and eight ziplines. "
It's more like a museum, the state of Vermont and these beautiful mountains and the trees and the forest," said Arbortrek's Mike Smith. "The zipline is just how we move people through these different scenes."
All told, there's nearly a mile of cable to ride on. The company estimates the ziplines can
take you up to 39 miles an hour. Guests have to be at least eight years old and in good health, but not extreme sports masters. "I am far from an athlete," Greene chuckled.
The computer consultant worried he wouldn't have much control over speed and stopping, but expert guides walked him through the ins and outs. "I definitely like feeling like I'm in control," he said. "You know you're in control, and if you're not, they're going to take care of it."
For the Smuggler's Notch Resort, this is more than just fun, it's serious business. In Vermont, skiing and snowboarding are huge drivers to the state's economy, with 4.3 million skier visits last season and $750-million in direct spending. But for the industry to keep growing, it's had to diversify into warm-weather offerings.
All across New England, ski areas are investing in summertime attractions from golf courses to pools and waterslides to mountain coasters, all to keep guests coming year-round. "It's really been vital for us," explained Bill Stritzler, the owner of the Smuggler's Notch Resort. "We do probably 40-45 percent of our business now outside of the winter."
The $100, approximately three hour-long Arbortrek trip gave Barry Greene a memorable thill and an appreciation that ski areas aren't just for cold-weather use. "Definitely a lot of fun," he beamed.
