'Save the Nelsons' Marriage' fundraiser supports Habitat for Humanity
Door County Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Rick Nelson and his wife, Barbara, will set up housekeeping Friday atop scaffolding in the parking lot of the local Habitat for Humanity facility at 410 N. 14th Ave. in Sturgeon Bay.
In an effort to raise at least $15,000 for Habitat's affordable housing programs, the couple will live, eat, sleep and enjoy what the local chapter says may be the last few hours of marital bliss while living in substandard accommodations.
According to the tongue-in-cheek announcement, if the fundraising goal is not met by 4 p.m. Sunday, Barbara "has threatened to end their marriage of 39 years, seeking more comfortable living arrangements and leaving her husband alone on the scaffolding."
To punctuate her dissatisfaction and in the event that at least $2,000 is raised by Rick's and Barbara's friends Barbara will shave her husband's head on the anniversary of the date 42 years ago at the Donna Theater during which he asked her to "go steady." She will return to him the class ring that he gave her that night.
"Rick may attempt to get back into her good graces by soliciting additional contributions on Sunday evening," the announcement said.
Events are planned throughout the weekend. Music from the 1960s and 1970s (to recall the early days of the Nelsons' courtship and marriage) will be played, and food will be available. Activities will include a Habitat Fruit Cake toss, a nail-hammering contest and birdhouse-building for the first 50 kids. A silent auction will feature donations from Habitat supporters.
The ReStore will offer discount shopping for people donating toward the $15,000 fundraising goal. Observers will be able to see Habitat volunteers begin construction of a playhouse that will be the object of a summer-long raffle.
The public is invited to visit the Nelsons, the Habitat office and the ReStore throughout the weekend.
