Job ads partly recover in June

Online job advertisements rose by 4.2 per cent in June, while newspaper adverts fell by 4.9 per cent, according to the latest figures from ANZ.

Total job advertisements for the month increased by 3.7 per cent to counter some of the large drop recorded in May.

ANZ head of Australian economics and property research Ivan Colhoun said there was a declining trend for job ads.

"This disappointing result suggests the drop in advertising in May is reflective of weaker economic conditions in the non-mining sectors of the economy, rather than just the effects of the extended Easter/ANZAC Day long weekend," he said.

"Anecdotal evidence from ANZ’s business customers is beginning to indicate more limited hiring intentions due to mixed economic conditions."

He said that, historically, declining trends in job advertising have not been consistent with rising interest rates, and usually foreshadowed lower interest rates.

"ANZ now expects the RBA to leave interest rates unchanged for the remainder of 2011, with the next increase not expected before February 2012."

The number of job advertisements in total is now 9.8 per cent higher than at this time last year, but remains below the long-term trend of 10.7 per cent growth. ANZ also said the total number of job advertisements was 48 per cent below the all-time peak recorded in April 2008.

ANZ said it predicted the unemployment rate to remain unchanged at 4.9 per cent when data are released on Thursday.
