NAVIGON iPhone Design Car Kit

Your multitalented iPhone can be a great travelling companion for those summer road trips. With its built-in GPS, it can be an ideal guide. A variety of dedicated mobile navigation systems have been adapted for iOS devices. As we mentioned in an earlier review , NAVIGON remains our favorite (and we'll catch up on some of the newly added features in a bit). First, this spring, NAVIGON started shipping a rather elegant car kit for the iPhone 4.

Simple But Effective
The NAVIGON iPhone 4 Design Car Mount Kit is simple, sturdy, well designed and reasonably priced (currently on sale for $39.95 from BringMobi.com ). Unlike the Tom Tim car kit for the iPhone, which provides a secondary GPS and built-in speaker, the NAVIGON entry is primarily a mounting kit with power adapter. Having used both, we were a bit surprised to discover that the NAVIGON approach actually provided some benefits over the more complex device.

The GPS receiver on our iPhone 4 works quite well on its own and is noticeably more robust than the 3GS. In fact, it seems to at least equal the Tom Tom mount's built-in receiver. It locks on to a signal quickly and with roadworthy accuracy. Secondly, the Tom Tom kit's built-in speaker may help in driving environments that are quite noisy, but the sound quality (as well as volume) of the iPhone 4's built in speaker is more than acceptable in most cases and a bit less raspy. If you're using your iPhone as a sound source in your car, the NAVIGON software plays very nicely with your iPod and telephone services, automatically dipping the volume of the less important input.

Nice Body
The Design Car Kit looks and is built like an iPhone accessory should be. The body is thick and nicely sculpted, yet hides unobtrusively behind the phone. A lever that folds back into the body secures the large suction cup to the windshield (or dash adapter plate, if your state requires it). A ball and socket mount lets you fine-tune the angle, but the phone will easily flip between vertical and horizontal views. NAVIGON's software provides a nice screen layout in either format. One nice touch is the rubberized insert on the mount's body to hold the power/USB cable in place when the phone is removed. For travellers, the NAVIGON Car Kit is a bit bulkier than some other mounts, but its durability and simplicity should add up to a worthwhile tradeoff.

The included USB power adapter is a class act in and of itself.

Things to consider before you buy speaker cables

Speaker cables are very significant element of your sound system and they are as important as your speaker setup. It is not easy to believe that speaker cable quality makes a huge difference in the performance of your speaker setup. To check the reality about the performance, buy speaker cables of superior quality and feel the difference yourself. Cables you use can have a clear impact on the total sound quality of your music system. Even the most expensive and high-end speakers would not sound melodious with cheap and low-quality cables.

It is true that the technology used in the manufacturing of speaker cables has not enhanced to a great extent since the time when first speakers came into view in the market. There is a range of quality of speaker cables in the market and therefore there are differences in performance due to the use of different quality speaker cables. The design and the raw material used have not made a significant improvement for speaker cable performance to have much impact on the quality.  The most important feature in quality of speaker cables is the raw material used to produce them. A high-end cable must be made of an excellent wire material, which has least amount of signal loss and reduce attenuation.

Three parameters which decide the quality of a cable are resistance, capacitance and inductance, and ultimately affect the performance of speaker cables. The two commonly used materials in manufacturing of speaker cables are silver and copper.

Concluding parameter in the quality of a cable is conductivity. Silver has a better conductivity compared to copper. Conductivity is inversely proportional to the resistance of the wire, so with greater conductivity the signals get less attenuated. It also provides a much better signal response. Silver is expensive as compared to copper but there are cheaper solutions available, for instance, copper wires are used with silver plating to get the desired results.
