Austin singer Nakia: 'The Voice' has 'changed everything'
Thirty-six-year-old Austin singer Nakia Reynoso – known simply as Nakia to viewers of NBC’s “The Voice” – now has a much bigger voice in the music business.
Nakia was ousted in the next-to-last round of “The Voice,” a vocal competition featuring celebrity coaches, but the Austinite said the mega-hit TV show “has changed everything” for his music career. Nakia said his disappointment about not being one of the four finalists on “The Voice” was short-lived.
“I want to record a new album and get out on the road with a killer live show,” the shaggy-haired, bearded, bluesy singer told Examiner.com. “I love my fans so much, and I am so grateful to ‘The Voice’ for being the platform that allowed me to find them.”
The winner of “The Voice” will be revealed Wednesday night in a live telecast on NBC. Nakia said he’s rooting for Vicci Martinez, who is the remaining contestant from the singing team assembled by performer Cee Lo Green. Nakia raised eyebrows – including Green’s – when he launched his stint on “The Voice” with a rendition of Green’s hit song “Forget You.”
“Being a member of Team Cee Lo is like being an artist on a very eclectic record label with a wise, musical Buddha as its president,” said Nakia, who’s in Los Angeles for the show’s final two episodes. “There’s always a lesson to be learned and always another bar to raise.”
He added: “Cee Lo taught me to stay true to myself no matter what – to always be the exception to the rule. I believe that being who I am is what got me as far as I’ve come so far, and I know it will continue to take me much farther.”
Just how far remains to be seen (and heard). For now, Nakia – who describes his style as “soulful pop” – is coy about any record labels that have shown interest in his talent.
“I am open to meeting with anyone who’s interested in talking to me about my career, and I am currently doing just that. That’s all I can really say right now,” Nakia said.
What Nakia can say now is that “The Voice” has given him instant fame. Thanks to the show – and NBC’s prominent use of him in on-air promotions – Nakia said he can’t go anywhere without being recognized. Fans are recognizing a performer whose look remains unchanged from his pre-“Voice” days.
