Three earlier natural disasters led to the creation of the Veterinary Emergency Team. “Hurricanes Katrina and Rita really set the stage when a tremendous number of animals came into Brazos County,” Bissett said.
When Hurricane Ike attacked the Texas coast three years later, the college took in 200 large animals at the Brazos Valley Expo Center. “That was when I realized the value of combining service and education,” Bissett said. “The students evaluated the large animals and interacted with the evacuees. That proved to be a valuable lesson because we saw how much these students learned when they got out of the clinical setting and into the field.” Shortly thereafter, the Texas Animal Health Commission and college officials agreed to create the Veterinary Emergency Team.
Trained and Ready to Go Team members go through regular training, including participating in simulations at the Texas Engineering Extension Service’s Disaster City. That training helps ensure that the group is ready if it’s called into action. The team could be embedded with Texas Task Force 1 and would provide care for injured animals and the Task Force 1’s search and rescue dogs. The Veterinary Emergency Team also provides continuing education for veterinarians and is working toward increasing the coordination between the team and veterinarians who work in the affected area.
Bissett believes the team can provide valuable assistance during times of crisis. “I look at what we’re doing in emergency response and it’s consistent with our history of service to the state. It’s exciting to get our students involved in this,” Bissett said. “However, I hope we do this preparatory work and we never have to be deployed.
