Bridge repairs halted to keep traffic moving during flood

Few bridges over the Missouri River are functional because of flooding, so construction on the bridge near Leavenworth will be suspended to help alleviate traffic problems.</p><p>Repair work on the Centennial Bridge on Kansas 92 will come to a halt by tonight. The Kansas Department of Transportation made the call after a series of closures to the north.</p><p>The bridge has been heavily congested because of construction. Route 36 at St. Joseph is open, but there is construction on the Kansas side.</p><p>Other developments:</p><p>&#x2022;<strong>Disaster declaration:</strong> President Barack Obama issued a federal emergency declaration for Missouri because of flooding along the Missouri River system and flash floods in the northeast.</p><p> The declaration, which covers all 25 counties along the Missouri River, clears the way for federal aid in efforts to protect lives and property. Obama signed the same declaration for Kansas on June 25.</p><p>&#x2022;<strong>Wyandotte County:</strong> Water topped part of the Wolcott Levee near I-435 and Lakeside Speedway Thursday. The levee has not breached, but emergency crews are monitoring it.</p><p>&#x2022;<strong>Platte County:</strong> Route KK at Route B closed Thursday because of high water. The route served as a detour for a closed Safe & Sound Bridge on Route B at the Little Platte River. </p><p>The Platte River is rising, too, and the state will begin closing Route 45 near Farley by 8:30 a.m. today. The closure will affect through traffic from Missouri 92 to I-435. </p><p><strong>&#x2022;Leavenworth County:</strong> Union Pacific railroad tracks behind the Veterans Affairs hospital were washed out Thursday, causing four boxcars to overturn. Water topped a levee at the Department of Corrections, causing flooding in nearby agricultural land. </p><p>The city of Leavenworth closed the Riverfront Community Center due to sewer backup and ground water infiltration. The city also is working on sandbagging the water treatment facility. Officials say if the water rises another foot, operations will be shut down. </p><p>&#x2022;<strong>Parkville:</strong> Missouri Rep. Ron Schieber organized a meeting in Parkville on Thursday to address business preparedness and recovery. City officials say six businesses have temporarily moved and at least one has relocated permanently.</p><p>&#x2022;<strong>Levasy:</strong> Gov. Jay Nixon and members of the Missouri National Guard surveyed flood conditions in Levasy, Glasgow and Henrietta. In Levasy, floodwaters are expected to rise another foot during the next few days. </p><p>&#x2022;<strong>Doniphan County, Kan.:</strong> Thirty-two Kansas National Guardsmen are on duty to assist with evacuations. The city of Elwood requested a four-member Advanced Life Support Fire Engine Crew on Thursday to help crews working in the heat. </p><p>&#x2022;<strong>Atchison, Kan.:</strong> The river crested Wednesday morning at around 31 feet and was holding at about 30.82 feet. The city is stepping up patrols on Riverview Road because of increased traffic as residents come to view the river.

“I cannot remember a more anticipated season opener than this one,” says NPP Series announcer Gord Craig, “race fans in Lethbridge are in for an incredible show.”  This is the second time in the last three years that Bridge County Raceway has been the host track for the NPP season opener on the May long weekend.  At the 2009 season opener in Lethbridge, British Columbia’s Darrell Midgley and Jason Beaulieu won the Saturday and Sunday night Feature events.  Midgley, the 2009 NPP Series Champion says a bad night at the track is not an option. “All drivers want to start the season with a victory.  It’s a momentum builder that’s for sure.  Hopefully we can get the #14 Dodge to victory lane.”   Meanwhile Beaulieu, the 2007 NPP Series Champion has history on his side heading into the long weekend event in Southern Alberta.  “Lethbridge has been a pretty good track for us to race at,” says the Campbell River, British Columbia driver, “it’s a big, fast, fun race track.  I know there are going to be a few guys gunning for me because of my past successes.”  Jason Beaulieu has won five out of the nine NPP Series Feature events competed at Bridge County Raceway dating back to the 2006 season.
