Spay/neuter numbers reach 15k

"In our original plan, we thought that it would take 10 years to be able to see a 50-percent reduction in intake. It may still take 10 years, because every time you go down some, it's harder to go down that much again in the next year because you're working with a smaller number," said Linda Clemons, Humane Society director. "But the impact is being seen sooner than what we anticipated." "People don't realize what it costs to have the shelter in tax dollars. You have to pay an animal control officer -- we have three of them -- they have to go pick (the animals) up and bring them here, then you have salaries, vaccinations, feeding, baths and overhead costs. I don't think the public realizes that they really have a responsibility to spay and neuter," she said.

The Humane Society of Hancock County will reopen its low-cost spay and neuter clinic to the public in July.

Director Paula Krugh said the Humane Society has continued to struggle to fund operations and closed its spay and neuter clinic earlier this year because of a lack of funds.

"Basically it's a case of manpower and supplies. If the shelter is majorly full and everyone is taking care of the animals, we don't have the manpower or the money," Krugh said.

Thanks to a donation, as well as the efforts of the Humane Society's auxiliary group, the clinic will reopen in July.

"We have been able to (reopen it) with this gift, and the help of our auxiliary, because they have been working very hard to raise funds for the medical needs. I don't know how long we'll be able to keep it open, but that's our goal," Krugh said.

The Humane Society saw its animal population jump significantly in June from 130 animals to more than 180. Spring and summer always bring an influx of animals to the shelter because more cats are having kittens as well as more people are abandoning their animals, according to Krugh.

Hancock County Dog Warden Dana Berger confirmed he continues to see a lot of animal abandonments.

"We've had a lot of abandoned animals, out in the country, dumped. It makes it very difficult to get them; it makes our job even harder," Berger said.

Berger said animals abandoned in the country tend to become frightened of people and difficult to catch.

"It's a daily effort going there trying to get the animal. The animal is still so skittish," Berger said.

But the economy and the financial cost of caring for a pet also affect the homeless animal population.

"It's increasing not only because (people) haven't been able to afford (caring for their pets) but because they haven't been able to have their animals spayed and neutered," Krugh said.

The Humane Society continues to keep a waiting list of people wanting to surrender their animals, and often those people have more than one animal to surrender. There are now about 30 people on the list, Berger said.

"We are still desperately trying to help them as quickly as possible, but, I mean, we're full," Krugh said.

"We take as many as we can handle; we just try to help as many animals as we can within the confines that we're given. They just keep coming," Krugh said.
