Grand Rapids Fourth of July Celebration

When: 5 p.m.-midnight Monday

Where: Rosa Parks Circle downtown, off Monroe Center NW, and Ah-Nab-Awen Park, in front of Gerald R. Ford Museum, 303 Pearl St. NW

Admission: Free

Schedule of events:

5 p.m. — Parade, starting at Ottawa Avenue and Lyon Street NW

5:58 p.m. — National Anthem

Rosa Parks Circle Stage:

5:30 p.m. — Spitting Image

Monday’s Fourth of July celebration aims to bring a flash mob-style approach to singing “The Star-Spangled Banner,” with organizers urging everyone in the city to croon the tune at precisely 5:58 p.m., wherever they may be.

“We want people to sing on their front porch, in their cars, at work, it doesn’t matter where you are,” said celebration coordinator Ed Kettle. “We thought it would be kind of a nice expression.”

The patriotic display will get a big assist from several local radio and television stations that have agreed to broadcast the national anthem at the designated time, along with a recorded version that will be played over speakers downtown.

The performance will come after Grand Rapids’ inaugural downtown Fourth of July parade, which steps off at 5 p.m. Monday, at Ottawa Avenue and Lyon Street NW. The parade eventually will make its way to Veterans Memorial Park at 101 E. Fulton St. for a brief ceremony.

After the national anthem, an action-packed evening commences, with national and local acts performing on two stages.

Florida pop-punk band We the Kings will headline the free Fourth of July rock concerts on the Rosa Parks Circle stage, hosted by radio station 105.3 Hot FM.

The band, which is about to release a new album, “Sunshine State of Mind,” will perform immediately after the 10:30 p.m. Amway Corp.-sponsored fireworks display.

Meanwhile, up-and-coming country singer Ashley Gearing will play the Ah-Nab-Awen Park stage across the Grand River immediately preceding the fireworks display, in a show sponsored by 94.5 FM The New Thunder Country.

A special announcement of a community project will be made at 8:20 p.m.

The Voices of Freedom will get things started at Ah-Nab-Awen Park with patriotic songs at 6 p.m., followed by sets from J3, Trace and Delilah DeWylde & the Lost Boys, along with other entertainment.

The “Hair of the Dog” Tour rolls on into July!!! Monday, June 27th, 2011 | Uncategorized

Greetings from Salt Lake City, UT my friends. We are 2 weeks into our “Hair of the Dog” Tour and I must say, it has been amazing so far. This is our first time coming out West and the crowds have been awesome. So supportive and enthusiastic, and Colorado might be taking the lead for having the most people dancing at shows. So far, everywhere has been great, but we love it when people get out of their seat and come down front to cut a rug! We’ve seen Rocky Mountains, Grand Canyons and even a few creatures of the West; like an Elk we had the pleasure of viewing on the side of a backwoods road in Arizona yesterday. Truly an amazing animal. Being from the Northeast and being the first Elk I’d ever laid my eyes upon, it sort of reminded me of a cross between a moose and a deer. Very cool. And for July the “Hair of the Dog” Tour rolls on into these states and dates:

July 4 - West Yellowstone, MT - West Yellowstone Concert Series

July 6 - Granby, CO - Sol Vista Basin

July 7 - Denver, CO - Walnut Room

July 8 - Winter Park, CO - Winter Park Pub

July 9 - Breckenridge, CO - 320 South

July 10 - Colorado Springs, CO - Front Range BBQ

July 12 - Chicago, IL - Kinetic Playground

July 13 - Grand Rapids, OH - Grand Rapids Roadhouse

July 14 - Cleveland, OH - Beachland Concert Series

July 15 - Clarion, PA - Toby Hill Bar

July 16 - Carlisle, PA - West Pomfret Music in the Garden (4pm)

July 16 - Bloomsburg, PA - Harry’s (10pm)

It’s been a great tour so far and we’re gonna keep that train rolling. We hope to see you out at a show here in the West, and back on the East coast when we return. And be sure to mark the dates of July 29 and 30 on your calendar, because we’re gonna be celebrating our new CD “Sweet Nothings” at the Lizard Lounge in Cambridge, MA when we return. See you out on the road!
