Success: From prison ship to tourist trap and a fiery end on Lake Erie
PORT CLINTON -- From his family's home in Port Clinton, Rich Norgard could see the spot where the ship Success met its end.
The teak sailing ship, built as a hauler in the 1840s, caught fire 65 years ago today, July 4, 1946, on Lake Erie near Port Clinton.
Norgard heard his father tell of the ship burning for days, and read a newspaper article in 1966 that led him on a quest to learn more about the ship's history.
"Dad used to tell me about it," Norgard said. "I asked a lot of questions about it."
And he told an audience at the Ottawa County Historical Museum -- some of whom remember the fire, and at least one of whom saw the ship on display -- about the odyssey of Success, which began as a hauler in the Indian Ocean, was used for a time as a floating prison, and spent a significant portion of the early 20th century as a tourist trap.
The ship was launched in 1840. It displaced 621 tons, and had a couple cannons, but it had false gunports, black squares painted on the hull of the ship to look like gunports from a distance.
"It didn't have to be fast," Norgard said. "It just had to carry lots of stuff."
Even then, the ship was so large and so heavy that it would run aground easily -- an omen of its later fate.
"It was forever running aground," Norgard said.
It was used to haul cargo for a couple years, then changed over to a passenger ship, taking people from England to Australia in the 1840s and 1850s. On its last voyage to Australia, the crew deserted, as the colony was in the middle of a gold rush.
The ship was anchored offshore in Hobson's Bay, and started to serve as a prison for a growing population. The ship had some famous inmates, including "Mad Dog" Morgan, Harry Power -- whose gang included a young Ned Kelly -- and Owen Suffolk, who began writing "Days of Crime and Years of Suffering" while he was on the Success.
The ship also served as a women's prison and as a boys reformatory for a time. The ship was sold at auction in 1890. Alexander Phillips, the buyer, originally wanted to cut it down, but instead he decided to turn it into a tourist attraction, buying prison artifacts and sailing the ship to Sydney, where it acquired a new, if not entirely truthful, history as a ship built in 1790 and the oldest sailing ship on the seas.
The Success sank in 1892, but it was raised after six months and refitted -- although not soon enough to take it to the Columbian Exposition in Chicago, which was planned. The ship did have copper sheeting added to its hull.
