Reflections: Struggling through the storms of life

"The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?" -- Psalm 27:1

The storms of life can sometimes be more than a person can manage ... the loss of a loved one, mounting pressures from illness, abuse, financial woes or even a much-desired new promotion, career change or exam.

All of these can lead a person into a very stressful state. Stress is among the most debilitating emotions that we encounter on a fairly regular basis.

Jesus handled encounters with stress in a different way, and his example can teach us a lesson. In the Gospel of St. Mark, chapter 4, verses 35-41, we see where the disciples were faced with the fearful and stressful dilemma of being in a ship when a particularly bad storm placed their vessel and lives in great peril. When Jesus was awakened and told of the problem, he arose from his slumber, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Peace, be still!" When he addressed the disciples further, he remarked about their faith and how little it was. Fear and stress can change your perspective on many things.

What we can learn and take away from this account is that faith is quite an important factor in our daily lives. Also, we can learn that when Christ is on our side, the impossible becomes possible. Our stress can be effectively managed.

These types of situations in our lives are storms that can produce behavioral and attitudinal concerns in whatever we may be doing. Some storms can produce a predictive change of obedience in our attitude as in the account of Jonah and the encounter he had with the whale (Jonah 1: 4-17). Other storms can leave our faith bolstered, as Paul's account in Acts 27:18-25.

No matter what the situation is, we must acknowledge, in our personal and professional lives, that we will face hardships, delays and difficult times. Difficult times like divorce, career change, child-rearing and serious illness can set us on a path of confusion, indecision and frustration. The Lord has said that he will neither leave us nor forsake us" (Deuteronomy 31:6; Hebrews 13:5).

We need to do our part and have faith, courage, and be prayerfully intentional about the challenges of life that we will face. There will always be challenges and storms in our life. How we choose to face them makes all the difference in the world.

Broadly written, insurance is designed to transfer potential risk between two entities, usually for a monetary fee. Therefore it is understandable that as the world has evolved, so too has insurance developed to cover different risks in different settings and situations, leaving us with a wide variety of kinds of insurance used to cover all different kinds of risks around the world.

Typically, different types of insurance are referred to as insurance ‘lines’ or ‘lines’ of insurance. Usually, insurance lines designed for retail sale to individual clients are usually lumped into life insurance and non-life insurance which is occasionally referred to as ‘general insurance’. Some widely known lines of insurance include but are not limited to; auto insurance, also known as motor insurance, home insurance, property insurance, casualty insurance, health insurance, liability insurance and many more specialized lines of insurance.

By and large, insurance product names are relatively self explanatory, although often it is the smaller details that make defining differences in insurance policies. Auto, or motor insurance, obviously covers the risks of driving and will usually take the form of either third party insurance or comprehensive insurance, whereby the former will cover all damages to other people and their property, whereas the latter will cover the insured individual’s losses as well.

Home insurance will typically insure against most damage to their homes, although this may exclude damage from sources such as fires, earthquakes, storms or flooding, depending on geographical location. Similarly, property insurance will protect against the damage or theft of property, although property insurance has diversified to the point where policies can cover almost everything from airports and planes to wedding rings.

Health insurance lines are designed to cover issues related to paying for healthcare access and treatment. This can include a number of varied products including international health insurance , maternity health insurance and even dental insurance.
