St. Mary's of Michigan hosts 10K, 5K races along Saginaw Riverwalk June 25
SAGINAW — St. Mary’s of Michigan is hosting its 33rd Annual Run/Walk for Health on June 25.
The day features a 10K run at 8 a.m., a 5K run at 8:05 a.m. and a 5K walk at 8:07 a.m.; The course is along the Saginaw Riverwalk.
The races start and finish the Michigan CardioVascular Institute building, 1015 S. Washington in Saginaw.
Last year, more than 400 runners and walkers participated.
Along with the races, the day includes free blood pressure checks, blood typing, nutrition information and a kid’s zone. Saginaw Public Libraries, Downtown Saginaw Farmers Market, YMCA, Gift of Life and Saginaw Rowing Club will attend as health fair vendors.
There will be live entertainment and refreshments at the finish line.
Registration is $20 online before midnight on June 22, and is $25 up to the day of the rest and is only available on site. The fee includes a T-shirt.

West Michigan Urgent Care 5K – Race Report
Why the heck am I writing a race report for a 5k? Just because I prefer to run a little bit longer than a 5K doesn’t make me a snob does it? On Saturday the first annual West Michigan Urgent Care 5K was held in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This was not one of those races I had been planning for. In fact I found out about the race the night before on Gazelle Sports Event Calandar when I was trying to come up with something my daughter Lily and I could do for fun on Saturday. Here is how that conversation went.
Lily: Dad can we play Wii all weekend?
I love it when my daughter wants to spend quality time with me. This means I have to sacrifice any chance at a PR, but there is no better quality run then running with your child. The evening before we played Wii like she asked, but when I said it was time for bed so she would have energy for the race, she quickly went to bed. It was even easier to get her out of bed to get ready. If only there was a race everyday for her.
Race day! We arrived early and were some of the first people there. We wanted a good parking spot to beat the crowd on the way out. Meeting people before the race was great. Many had run the Fifth Third River Bank run the weekend before and a couple were set to run the Bay Shore Marathon next weekend. We waited for the crowd to show up, but started the race before they ever showed up. The race was run mostly down Cascade road through some neighborhoods and back to the West Michigan Urgent Care at the corner of East Paris and Cascade Road. The Kent County Sheriff’s Department secured the road and the volunteers pointed us in the right directions. It was a good course with a few hills to keep it fair. With a field of 24 runners and walkers it was fun and friendly. Lily and I got to see the leaders of the race as they turned for the final mile making it encouraging for her. She ran a lot more than I remember her running in the last 2 races.
After the first mile Lily and I never got passed. A couple behind us was pushing hard to catch us late in the race, but Lily really turn it on to finish strong. She finish first in her age group and 15th overall. I am so proud of her.
