What I like about kick-boxer Golola

By James Bakama

ONE thing that struck me about kick-boxer Moses Golola was his marketing skill. He knew exactly how to tickle the masses that by fight day, tickets for his contest against Sudanese Abdul Quadir had virtually sold out.

You have to be unique to grab public attention. Yoweri Museveni attracted the spotlight in Uganda’s last Presidential elections by turning musical in his campaigns with the vastly popular Mpe Nkoni folktale rhyme.

Golola on his part gripped the masses by not only being comical but also at times getting ridiculous.

“I can hang clothes on an MTN line and tear pages out of Facebook,” such outbursts made him every journalist’s dream and amidst all this, public interest was growing.

I did not attend the fight but from reports of colleagues who were at the ringside, getting a seat at Hotel Africana was not easy.

The last time I saw a Ugandan sportsman drum up such attention was in 1997 when Justin Juuko fought Russia’s Volodymyr Matkivskyy. After all the pre-fight talk, the official weighing was set at Kampala’s City Square.

Boxing weigh-ins are usually done while the fighters are stark naked. Juuko and Matkivsky were a bit more civil. They mounted the scale in underpants. But even then, almost the entire city was drawn to the venue wanting to make sense of what these almost naked men were up to.

By fight day, the entire Nakivubo stadium was almost packed. There couldn’t have been better advertisement.

This all reminds me of boxing legend Muhammad Ali. By the time he stormed onto the prize fighting scene in early sixties, the sport, more so the heavyweight division was more of a dull affair with fighters who only expressed themselves with their fists.

But Ali, who was at the time going by the names Cassius Clay, revolutionized boxing promotion. Ali not only livened the sport with his poetry, but also predictions on the rounds when his opponents would fall.

Golola like Juuko and Ali, knows how to convince even the peasant in Kisenyi surrender his hard earned money for a ticket. The 3,500 people that he drew on Saturday was a local kick boxing record. The biggest crowd had earlier been 500.

He has single handedly lifted the sport several tiers up. Whether the Uganda Kick-boxing Association can maintain the standards, is another issue.
