IBM Claims a “Game Changing” 500-Mile Battery: So Where's the Beef?

The holy grail for electric cars is a battery pack that can routinely deliver 300 miles of range. Tesla Motors is planning to offer such a long-range pack in the Model S sedan next year. But what if we could exceed 300 miles and deliver range beyond that of most of today’s gas cars, replacing the lithium-ion technology that’s standard today with something better?

That’s the tantalizing promise of IBM ’s Battery 500 project, which as the name implies is aimed at getting 500 miles out of a charge. IBM says it has made recent breakthroughs with lithium-air batteries , but there are plenty of skeptics who say that lithium-air will never be ready for prime time.

We’ve been down this road before with game-changing battery technologies that look great on paper or in the lab, but then meet unmovable technical obstacles — including the tendency to explode, catch fire or expire after a short time. Air batteries will need on-the-road validation, and they haven’t had any of that yet.

Light batteries with big range

Lithium-air batteries do away with the heavy conventional compounds used as cathodes in lithium-ion, replacing them with oxygen. That results in a very light battery with the prospect of much greater energy density. But there’s always been one huge stumbling block — the batteries weren’t rechargeable. Winfried Wilcke , who runs the project at IBM’s Almaden Research Center in Silicon Valley, told me his lab has licked that problem, and the prospects for the air batteries are really bright:

Wilcke says IBM will have a car-sized battery ready in three years, and will then amaze the world. He thinks he can achieve an energy density of 1,000 watt hours per kilogram, which is one big improvement from lithium-ion’s 150 watt hours per kilo.

With numbers like that, it’s not surprising that Don Hillebrand of Argonne National Laboratory says that lithium-air

It’s not going to happen

Indeed, there are lots of skeptics. Lithium-air has gotten a lot of hype , says researcher Jeff Dahn of Dalhousie University in Canada, but it also has big problems. He points to the fact that lithium can react violently when it meets moisture, which is inherent in the air this technology uses to generate electricity. That requires complex membranes to allow in oxygen but keep water out.

Rechargeable Digital Camera Batteries | New Electric Cars

The lure to use rechargeable batteries for digital cameras has been so great in the recent years. Many people are just so thankful that they no longer have to buy new batteries every time their old ones get used up.

Owners of digital cameras are just as grateful for the existence of rechargeable batteries. This means, they need not spend for new batteries especially during emergency situations. They don’t have to deal with the alkaline batteries that get discharged easily after only a few shots. But with digital camera rechargeable batteries, all you have to do is recharge them through electricity over and over again.

Many of you may think that these rechargeable batteries are a recent invention. What you don’t know is that the first rechargeable battery was actually invented way back in 1859. It was Gaston Plante who created the lead-acid battery that could be recharged using a reverse current. Plante’s battery was used then to power the lights of train carriages.

More than 20 years later in 1881, Camille Alphonse Faure invented a more advanced version of the rechargeable battery.

There are different types of Sony Digital Camera Battery such as sony NP-F550 battery  and sony DSC-T7 battery . But experts strongly recommend the Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) types because they can serve a variety of purposes.

In fact, they can recharged for 500 times. Additionally, they are cheaper and environment friendly.

For people who are more particular about the type of NiMH batteries to use, they can go for the low discharge ones. This only means that these rechargeable batteries can retain their capacity even when stored for 6 months to one year unlike the other types. Most stores also sell them pre-charged already so that they can immediately be used.

The Lithium-ion batteries have lower self discharge rate and are lighter in weight compared to the others.

Their main advantage is its higher energy density which means they can store more energy. They can also function even at higher voltages. While the other batteries continue to discharge little by little every day even when not installed in the digital camera, the Li-ion type does not but rather retains most of its charge. The only downside is its high cost.

To use these rechargeable digital camera batteries, you will need to get a charger. A flexible charger is an ideal choice. This is packed with great features such as being able to charge both NiMH and NiCd batteries, automatic shut off when batteries are fully charged, is able to charge each battery individually and switch automatically from recondition mode to recharge mode.
