Are crosswalks dangerous for the elderly?

With the elderly population in the country increasing and a majority of older individuals favoring city living, some studies have found that crosswalks are becoming dangerous for senior citizens.

According to this report from the Los Angeles Times many city crosswalks were built in a time when the goal was to get as much traffic through the streets as possible. Crosswalks in New York or other large cities can stretch six or eight lanes wide.

An increasing number of senior citizens are choosing to live in large cities due to the convenience and better medical care afforded in such areas. But those that no longer drive often find that pedestrian crossings simply don't offer them enough time to get to the other side of the street.

The article reports that pedestrian deaths involving senior citizens are shockingly high. Throughout the nation, senior citizens make up 13 percent of the population but account for 22 percent of pedestrian deaths.

Cities and citizens need to become more aware of this issue.  Some cities, like New York, are taking steps to make their streets friendlier for seniors. In 2008, New York began Safe Streets for Seniors , an initiative to help older residents by installing countdown tickers, medians and extended curbs as well as increasing crossing times at some intersections.

Hopefully street safety will gain more attention and legislators at the city, state and national levels will begin to find ways to make life better for senior pedestrians.
