Layoffs at El Museo del Barrio
As part of an effort to trim $1.1 million from its budget, El Museo del Barrio in East Harlem has laid off four staff members, including its press officer, out of a total staff of 51. El Museo is facing a potential 10 percent cut in its operating subsidy from New York City, as well as decreases in private support, the museum’s interim director, Georgina M. Nichols, said in a telephone interview.
In addition to the layoffs, the museum has reduced its summer program and lengthened the amount of time that exhibitions will run, Ms. Nichols said. The museum, which just opened its largest-ever biennial exhibition , is also searching for a new director. The previous director, Julián Zugazagoitia, left last September to become director of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Mo.
